Ep 4: Misty
Hello! This is about up to Episode 4 of Yellowjackets, and ONLY episode 4 of Yellowjackets. I have not seen beyond the fourth episode, at all, and know NOTHING about this show. Please do not spoil it for me.  Things that are spoilery in nature, for me, include: saying things like  “Just wait!!” confirming or denying anything I put forward, outside information about the cast interviews or creator statements, leading questions like “Do you think “blank moment” means anything?” etc. Remember  that Y’ALL HAVE SEEN THE SHOW AND I HAVE NOT. This informs the way you  talk about things relating to the show. Just be really careful is all  I’m asking. Also: If there is LITERALLY any stance I  could take on this show or character that would make you upset, please  just fucking block the tag
If you WOULD like to discuss the show and my takes on it, the Discord is right here! I don’t go there, so it’s a great place to get every emotion out.
Please thank @sailorsunspot and @moonlight-frittata for backing this odd way of doing a liveblog, and remember my tip jar is always open
I feel like every time I watch this show and specifically every time I watch Misty, all I can say is “Holy shit, oh my god” and though it is not very interesting, it is always right. I laughed ALOUD at the “do people write notes…before they’re murdered, or is that more of a suicide thing?” I have never identified with Misty more even though I would not be surprised if in fact Misty did kill Travis. Why? I mean, at this point I’d be satisfied with “for the same fucking reason she pulled Nat’s starter” to bring her closer
Which is sort of a tangential segue into what I wanted to talk about with Misty and her being a CNA. I am so embarrassed I didn’t see this before, but it’s just a natural outgrowth of her desire for people to NEED her, to be placed in a position where she’s the one who can help. But she couldn’t hack it as a nurse, I guess, or the schooling, so here she is, and it’s not at all what she imagined, it’s bringing jello to old people.
This is another reason why it wouldn’t surprise me at all if Misty were at the heart of a lot of this. It’s getting the band back together! It’s reconsturcting a part of Misty’s life that, so far, we’re shown is some of the happiest she’s ever been, because she is useful, and in groups like this, she can’t be on the outs. She can be teased, but even when they tease her about wanting to give a sponge bath to Coach Ben, she is more a part of this group than she has been before. She is more a poart of SOMETHING.
So, even to the extreme negative, I absofuckinglutely think Misty is capable of this shit, and quite willing to engage in it--we see how she has access to people who can hack email, she can track people down, and she knows enough about being caught to know how NOT to be caught.
So where do we think her obsession with coach Ben is going? I mean, TIMES ARE TOUGH, we’re out here with exactly two guys and a lot of women who so far assume they dig on dudes and also are swelling with hormones. But I think Misty was latched onto him long before we ever boarded that plane. His leg has made him rely on her, and that reliance feels like love to her, I think, even if there is no way in heaven or hell Ben would be interested.
Fucking tailing Nat after Nat tells her the plans are none of her business, Jesus Christ, Misty, and it’s just another example of how Misty doesn’t understand why no one likes her and why she can’t have friends. Nat is no fucking peach, and I’m the first to say that, but Misty either has no actual idea about appropriate ways to act, or doesn’t care. And really, I think it’s a little of both, i think Misty has somehow talked herself into the idea that she alone, bullied and beleaguered, has the right to act however she wants because she’s HELPING. When she stalks Nat, she sees it as HELPING, she talks herself into the fact that she is looking out for her, she ‘has her back’ this isn’t creepy, it’s helpful. I think to a very large extent, she buys her own bullshit on this.
It’s pathetic as fuck, but Nat is the closest thing she has to a friend. It’s such a perfect moment when the gal that she takes out as a cover (brilliant, by the way, I laughed. Great touch.) tells her that she reminds her of her granddaughter and “no one really likes her either”
The show is working with Misty in such a way that it wants to show us how a person can be lonely and unliked and to what extent do we allow ourselves to feel like they have it coming?

Yellowjackets S1 E4 thoughts and guesses
Misty what the fuck? It's only been like a week, these girls cannot be that horny ☠️
Was honestly wondering if a show about like a dozen teen girls being stranded in the wild would address the monthly visitor issue and I'm glad it did.
Tell me Shauna isn't pregnant 🙃
I don't know who I can stand less; Travis or Shauna's daughter
I still support Shauna's wrongs
I support Misty's wrongs too 🥹
I'm rooting for Taissa and Van but if they're not together in the future then I'm guessing Van dies. Taissa got lucky though cause her wife is awesome so far.
Somebody really wants the story.
Still waiting for Jackie to step up and show exactly why she was made their leader cause right now she's just the load everybody's gotta carry.
I guess the graffiti was her wife after all. There's no way the kid could have snuck out and done it, right?
"it's not my fault your lady-blood is scaring all the prey away" wouldn't that attract predators then? I guess that explains the wolf Taissa is seeing. I wonder if that's what takes Jackie out.
Am I shipping adult Nat and adult Misty? Yes. Yes I am.
Maybe Taissa painted the graffiti in some sort of trance
The point about wasting the candles is super valid. And since everyone is mad at her at this point, she really shouldn't be turning into a bigger burden and making bad decisions like that.
Jackie is definitely dead. Called it.
The daughter saying "you're not fine! You think I can't see that?" as if she hasn't been a dick to her mom every time she's been on screen so far is just 🙃
Van needs more screentime
Taissa definitely sees the ghost or whatever too. Side-note: is it Tilda Swinton?
Please, not another Ezria
GET WRECKED CALLIE
So was Callie the baby she was pregnant with?
I knew it was a nannycam 🤣

So I’ve had some concerns about Nat, narrative and character wise, from the beginning, because she is primed for what I like to call ‘that cool girl shit,’ that disaffected, ‘real’ Daria-ass bullshit that was so popular for so long and poisoned the fucking well of any character who was slightly acerbic, for me.
I have A LOT more faith that this show is not going to do that, or at the very least, it’s going to say, “Yeah that’s exactly what Nat is going for, unfortunately she’s pathetic and wet and full of shit” which is a stance I support and cheer.
That being said, when we opened the show with Nat seeing her dead father and I knew we were going to see her tragic anime backstory, I had one (1) (yuri) fear. Luckily, I feel personally like we managed to avoid that. Let’s discuss.
First of all, I know I’m making a lot out of this, but I do think it’s basically the same thing that keeps coming up (And is going to be even more prominent with Shauna) that these bitches never grew up and left the woods. Nat is that as well, as we see her literally inhabit the past in a clever scene switch from present to past, watching her own younger self go by her in the hallway. It is as real to her as if it were happening right that instant.
We’re opening a line here, I think, to point out that Nat sometimes thinks of herself as responsible when she’s not. In what she thinks will be her final moments, she sees her father, feels blamed for his death, and to at least some extent she must believe that’s true, or she wouldn’t see him. It’s that old “first you must find someone who can be made to feel inferior”: If Nat truly, in her heart of hearts, did not feel at all responsible for his death, she wouldn’t be imagining that, in the moment. Of course, she is not responsible, and I knew that FROM the word go, not to count on my own cleverness, but I think the show was perfectly happy with you realizing that early. All it is trying to show with this is:
A) Nat talks a real tough game, but most of her badass moments are accidental or impulse. She’s not nearly as tough as even she thinks she is, she’s basically some stupid baby owl making herself puff up and hissing. Nat’s sitting in some stupid bar like, “My Dad screamed at me for years, and one day he ended up shot during an argument...accident. Shame.” And she takes a swig of her whiskey and shes’ told you the truth, but she’s told you the truth in a very particular way that leads you to a lie.
B) Nat does on some level believe that bad accidents or happenings that are AROUND her are ABOUT her. I am team “travis killed himself” even though I have some suspicions that the show is going to make it into a thing (more on this later) but even if he did, Nat would continue to say he didn’t, I assume for some stupid reason like “we promised’ or something, and of course it has to be ABOUT Nat.
We can’t talk about Nat without talking about Travis.
I am not INTO Travis, I do not LIKE Travis nor cheer him, but I think it’s easy for me not to hate him, because the show looks at me, not liking Travis, nor thinking he needs a hug or whatever the fuck ever, and is like, ‘That’s a valid perspective!” which does so much to help me appreciate an unlikable character.
And I love how he makes Nat unlikable. The way she boldly manipulates Kevyn’s kindness, going so far as to go back to her old house to find the mix, in order to show him that she had it and bring up all those old feelings in him--this is not a spontaneous moment where she was accidentally a little bit of a shit. This was as calculated as her perfect shot in the forest. Ready aim fire, that is absolutely what she was doing and Kevyn got fucking baited like a deer. “I can’t stop thinking about Travis” oh my god, like, we all know Misty is out of her fucking mind and that’s great, but Nat, also, is a complete mess, and also, an asshole, because unlike Misty, I am 10000% sure that Nat knows what she’s doing is not okay. Misty I go back and forth on, she’s wild, but NAT knows.
Anyway, from the time she put her hands all over a dead body, cut off a finger, because she had the stomach for it, because she is more of a born CREATURE than Travis could ever be, Travis has been motivating her, in one way or another, not in ways I think he’s cognizant of, and in ways I know she doesn’tr understand, toward her worst impulses.
Maybe with Travis by her side, she could have been the one who shot him. She sure does with the deer.

With Lottie we are CLEARLY playing with the old, “Is she crazy or is the a prophet?” “Yes” thing, and I have no problem with this and very much looking forward to seeing how we progress along this line.
I am in love with Shauna’s think about writing, and how she’s making it make sense to herself. I have keptn a journal for years and years, and that’s very much how I would identfy it: Making my life make sense to myself. I go back and read the way I felt about people when I first met them, what I noticed about them, what i noticed about me, I have clear, crisp memories immediately when I get back into it, and it, later, gives me distance on how I experienced something versus how I am remembering it later. I love it, truly, it makes me feel connected with my own life.
I am not going to do a whole post on how unbelievably, stupidly incorrect everything around the shooting/hunting sequence of ideas is, but I need you all to know I am going to have a fucking stroke, there is so much more to hunting than just being a good shot, this is not even remotely the smartest way to go about things, and also, I don’t care if Travis is the best shot on planet fucking earth, if someone has acted that way with a gun, we do not let them have the gun and GO OFF WITH THE PERSON THEY HAD PROBLEMS WITH ARE YOU FUCKING OUT OF YOUR MIND.
So the plane. I assume Laura Lee is going to get the thing off the ground, but it’s not going to work somehow. I have no idea how I think they’ll go with it, but I dunno, moment of darkness, something something God, I am waiting. It can’t be for nothing that they have an extremely visibly religious character doing this, pusuing heaven, Tower of Babel, etc.
Both on that point and not on that point, the show gives us a moment of maybe, well, redemption doesn’t feel like the word I’m reaching for, but certainly it shows us that Jackie’s attitude wasn’t ever “fuck Van” it was “save Shauna” (I also maintain that Jackie made the absolute correct choice in the moment, even if it didn’t feel good)
I love that in the first thirty seconds of the show, they showed the girls brutally murdering another girl with the fucking pit. I think what they are trying to do with that moment, the more I watch the show, is reassure us they don’t have a Lost problem. When they  speak over and over again about something too horrific to admit or talk about, we know what it was! We know that they didn’t just become cannibals, they became predators, our in the wild. Now, do I think we fully do not have a Lost problem? UNSURE. I love what the show has done so far, but I am VERY nervous (please don’t say anything either way) that they might not know exactly what is the deal with the symbols, and whether or not there is anything supernatural at issue here, or who the architect of all this is.
I couldn’t work this into any of the longer posts or make it long enough to be its own, but his show works at its MOST genius when it is doing things in both a figurative and literal sense: When Jackie is literally and figuratively haunting Shauna, I love the way that while Travis is telling the truth, we are literally unburying bodies, When Shauna is pretending to be the teenager that she still actually is internally. Amazing.

Taissa’s story in this one is also fairly straightforward--This episode was largely about Nat, if we’re all dwelling in a space of honesty here.
So much of Taissa’s story, I think, is about domestication. Her wife, Simone, tells her to “be herself” but as we all know that is terrible fucking advice because Tai is a predaotr, she is a wild thing, she is not a domesticated dog like the rest of them. Even when we first see her at the party, our focus is on her uneven, minute wobble on too-tall heels, as if the platform they have placed her upon might crumble at any moment. She is in this world but not of it.
One fo the things I really really love about Tai, and one of the things that makes me feel uncomfortable, sometimes, and allied with her, and identified by her, is something that I think really comes out in this episode. People have a vision of optimism, of dedication to community, as being a very Usagi Tsukino-type thing. Very bubbly and kind and always loving and forgiving, but Taissa is not that. She is optimistic because she KNOWS the world can be better, she knows that we can get through all this, but she also knows that someone will have to pursue the hunt. Someone will have to be ruthless, and hard, and sometimes difficult and hard to live with. Optimism means knowing the world can be better, even if you are the one who has to drag it toward betterment.
Taissa is fucking INTENSE. “Why don’t people like you?” Sammy asks her, and oh I fucking understand why people don’t like her in the same way I understand why people don’t like me.
To that, I fucking adore that she loses her shit, completely blows her chance and to at least some extent, throws away her future, because the things Tai chooses to guard and keep, the promises she’s made to others but especially to herself, are non-negotiable. Now, would I have told Tai to come up with a lie that sounds like a revelation, to learn to tear up a little bit, or some shit? Sure. But do I also love watching her come unglued when she’s told to watch her fucking tone, like she’s a goddamn child and this fucking rich white lady can keep her as a pet? Yeah, we love it!
I have no idea what the hell I think is going on with Sammy. His watchfulness, it all ties back to the eyes, to Tai’s memories of the man with no eyes and the way he steals…I don’t know. I am constantly thinking a million things at once at everything suyrrounding what’s going on with the man with the eyes, and SEEING and being WATCHED, and how all that comes back to Taissa, and I haven’t figured out a good through line on where I think that’s going yet. I’m collecting little baubles about it and I feel like eventually it’ll all come together for me.

This is actually going to be a quick one because this is mostly the fun C plot to the very very heavy A plot and the fairly heavy B plot. Butr, let’s check in with one of our favorite unhinged disasters! (They are all my favorite unhinged disaster)
Once again, we’re being rammed into the fact that Shauna is in a state of arrested development, and feeling like she never got any of the normal things about being a teenager. She’s running around with Adam having what seems to me to actually be a really fun night--my wife never went on dates in high school and I’m considering doing something like this for our anniversary--but there’s this sense that she genuinely is trying to recapture something that simply can’t be brought back.
I love that moment in the parking lot where the guy scoffs at her and goes, ‘Lady, they’re not gonna card you.” Because that’s it, right? We can’t bring it back. Time’s arrow neither stands still nor reverses. Nothing she does, none of her fucking around with Adam, none of her drinking an everclear-juice cocktail, even jumping off a bridge, will bring her back to all that lost opportunity, all that lost innocence. None of it will bring Jackie back.
Except it DOES, right?
We know that Jackie metaphorically haunts ever fucking aspect of Shauna’s life, and I feel like in so many ways, Shauna is living her life as a form of atonement for Jackie’s death. Which, holy fuck do I love that, I think it’s incredible. But anyway, this is the first time I can recall that we SEE Jackie haunting Shauna. And what does she say?
“Someone’s gonna get hurt.”
Is she talking about jumping off the bridge? No, I don’t think o. I think she’s talking about everything that’s going on with Jeff, everything that’s going on with her daughter, everything that’s happening between her and Adam, and how there’s no way it can’t crash as hard as the plane itself.

Yellowjackets S1 E4 thoughts and guesses
I wasn't making notes for the first 40 minutes or so but Nat and so on having things with these guys is not gonna ruin my all-lesbian-soccer-team headcanon, but nice try, show!
I still don't like Travis.
"oh we got lucky and this dead guy had a whole armoury" maybe but it's funny how quickly bullets go when you're wasting them though.
Travis can suck a dick. At least the coach guy isn't as much of a jerk anymore.
I support all these women's wrongs.
I can't tell if Nat is really honest and direct or good at manipulating her old friend but pretty little liars could never
"my dad was an asshole and he hated me!" So he's not even acting out because he's dead, he's just an asshole in general
If Shauna's seeing a young Jackie and not an old one I feel like it confirms my theory that she's dead.
Nat's dad shooting himself in the head after telling her she's useless is just perfect.
Why am I not surprised Misty would be the first to volunteer to bleed the dead doe out?
Ngl I love her. She's so chaotic. I'm guessing she has Munchausen's by proxy and that's why she's doing all of this. Fascinating character.
Shauna seemed upset by Travis dying. I don't know if she suspects something more or if they bonded more but I'm hoping it wasn't yet another affair of some sort.
